Sulutepe

The Sulutepe field is located 9 km north-west of Baku, south-west of the Binagadi and Chakhnaglar fields, in the Binagadi oil and gas region. Like a natural museum, periodically active mud volcanoes, (Kechaldagh (Stone Mountain), Zigilpiri, Keyraki, Boyukdagh (Big Mountain), Kichikdagh (Small Mountain), etc.), various stratigraphic strata that appear on the surface, mud ponds, remains of flora and fauna are widely spread in the Binagadi oil and gas region, in the north-west of the Absheron Peninsula. The 100 year old Binagadi field, and the Girmaki, Chakhnaglar, Sulutepe, Masazir, Shabandag and Fatmayi (Sianshor and Mahammadli) fields, which have been in operation for 40-90 years, are located there. At present, these fields are in the final stages of development, and a large part of the remaining recoverable oil reserves (84.2%) have been extracted. The depth of the productive layer in the area ranges from a few metres to 2,000 m subsurface

The Sulutepe field was discovered in 1920, and the industrial development of the field began in 1932. Since the beginning of operation, 605 wells of various purposes have been drilled in the field. As of the 1st of January 2024, 6.914 million tons of oil and 828.9 million m3 of gas were extracted from these wells. The maximum oil production in the field was recorded in 1942 with 405,000 tons. At present, the field has 103 wells, 75 of them are operational.

In order to maintain reservoir pressure, water injection has been resumed in the field since 1956. In addition, in order to increase the oil yield of the reservoir, the implementation of a new artificial impact method on the reservoirs, microbiological impact was started in 1995.

The field is operated by Binagadi Oil Operating Company in accordance with the Agreement on the Rehabilitation, Development and Production Sharing for the Block, including Binagadi, Girmaki, Sulutepe, Chakhnaglar, Masazir, Fatmayi, Shabandagh and Sianshor Oil Fields, signed on September 29, 2004, between SOCAR, Azen Oil Company B.V. and SOCAR Oil Affiliate, which entered into force on September 1, 2005.
