Siyazan monocline

The Siyazan monocline is located 80 km north-west of Baku and belongs to the Guba-Caspian oil and gas region. The field occupies an area of 1,943 ha, from the Zarat railway station in the south-east and extends more than 90 km along the north-eastern foothills of the Great Caucasian mountains until Garachay. It is located in the territory of Siyazan, Shabran and Guba administrative regions. From the geological, structural and tectonic views and from the prospect of development, the monocline includes 5 main fields – Chahandar-Zarat, Siyazan-Nardaran, Saadan, Amirkhanly and Zaghli-Zeyva oil and gas fields.

This monocline differs from other fields by its complicated geological structure. Its oil and gas reserves were discovered in 1939. Oil gushed from the exploration well drilled in the Siyazan-Nardaran field with an output of 8 tons a day, proving the industrial oil reserves of the field.

The total length of the developing areas of the field is 55 km and 0.2-1 km wide. Since the beginning of its development, a total of 1,858 wells have been drilled at the Siyazan monocline, which has produced 15.427 million tons of oil and about 5.803 billion m3 of gas. The highest production of the field was in 1958 when 717,000 tons of oil was extracted from 482 wells. More than 60% of the operating fund is wells drilled more than 30 years ago.

In order to maintain the ecological balance and prevent environmental pollution, 84 absorption wells have been drilled to dispose of the water extracted from the fields together with oil. In addition, another environmental project is a new compressor station installed in the Zaghli-Zeyva field to collect associated gas. This station plays a major role in the natural gas supply of 1,250 householders in 15 surrounding villages in the region. The compressor station was built as part of the “National Action Plans to Reduce Carbon Emissions in the Fuel Consumption Sector of Azerbaijan” jointly implemented by SOCAR and the UN Development Programme in Azerbaijan.

As of January 1, 2024, a total of 1869 wells have been drilled in the Siyazan monocline, resulting in the production of 15.467 million tons of oil and 5.815 billion cubic meters of gas. The maximum production from the reservoir occurred in 1958, produced 717 thousand tons of oil from 482 wells. More than 60% of the production fund has been active for over 30 years.

The Siyazan monocline is operated by the Siyazanneft OGPD of SOCAR’s Azneft PU.
