Muradkhanli

The Muradkhanli oil field is located in the north-eastern part of the Yevlakh-Agjabadi lowland, 250 km south of Baku, in the plains of the Kurdamir and Imishli regions. The rise of Muradkhanli was discovered by gravimagnetic and seismic methods in 1965, and exploration drilling began in 1968. The field was put into operation in 1971 with the production of 70 tons of industrial oil per day from the depth of 3,761-3,786 m from well No. 5.

Tectonically, the Muradkhanli fold is a brachianticline with the length of 15 km and width of 11 km, extending to the north-west and south-east. The fold is divided by tectonic faults into three blocks. The daily output of volcanic rock-hosted oil varied between 2-5 and 500 tons. Even wells No. 53 and 130 produced 800-1,000 tons of oil per day. Despite the high productivity it was not stable for a long time because high-rate wells are filled with water quickly or covered with sand and often have to be repaired.

In 1972, well No. 8, drilled in the south-eastern part of the rise, produced 77 tons of oil per day and was put into operation by the fountain method. The maximum oil production in the Muradkhanli field in 1978 was 446,000 tons. As of the 1st of January 2024, a total of 142 wells have been drilled on the field, of which 18 are operating, 39 – non-operating, 1 is water-pumping, 7 are observation, and 77 wells are abandoned. As of the 1st of January 2024, 3.033 million tons of oil and 90 million m3 of gas have been extracted from the Muradkhanli field.

The field is operated by the A. Amirov OGPD of SOCAR’s Azneft PU.
