The Mishovdagh field is located in the north-eastern part of the Kura oil and gas region, between the fields of Kurovdagh, Kursangi and Galmaz, close by the city of Shirvan, 80 km from Baki, 5-6 km south-west of Hajigabul railway station, the Baku-Shirvan-Lankaran railway passes near this field. The relief of the deposit consists of low hills, ravines and mud volcanoes. The fold is divided into up to 25 tectonic blocks with a large number of faults in different directions, complicated by mud volcanoes. The highest point of the relief is in the area of the large Mishovdag mud volcano, which is 297 m above sea level.
The study of the geological structure of the Mishovdagh field, which is included in the Kalameddin-Bandovan anticline zone, was first started in 1930. In 1954-1956, more than 100 structural-exploration wells were drilled in the Mishovdag area, and the geological structure of the area was studied. Exploration well No. 1 drilled in the field was put into operation in 1956 with 30 tons of oil production per day. After that, the exploration work in the area was further expanded, and the oil and gas content of the horizons of the productive stratum was studied. All stratigraphic units involved in the geological structure of the Mishovdag field, from modern sediments to the bottom of the productive strata, have been identified. Modern sediments cover the entire north-eastern wing of the field and are 30-180 m thick. Ancient Caspian sediments, sometimes up to 150 m thick, are spread in the south-western and central parts of the area. Well No. 63 drilled in the north-western pericline of the structure is considered to be the deepest well in the field with an index of 4,133 m. As a result of exploration drilling in the Mishovdag field, a 13 m thick layer of sand was found in the heel through well No. 1,049 drilled in 2017. Later, the test data from other wells confirmed that this facility has oil and gas storage.
As of January 1, 2024, a total of 844 wells have been drilled in the Mishovdagh field and 69 of them were exploration wells. Since the beginning of the development, about 21 million tons of oil and 1.9 bcm of gas have been extracted from the field. The record output was 1.235 million tons of oil in 1963. At present, 123 out of 186 wells in the exploitation stock are active. Daily output of these wells is 215,000 tons of oil and 20,100 m³ of gas.
The development of Mishovdagh field is carried out by the Karasu Operating Company. The company is acting as an operator in accordance with the Agreement on the Rehabilitation, Exploration, Development and Production Sharing for the Block, including Mishovdagh and Kalamaddin Oil Fields in the Azerbaijan Republic signed on August 30, 2000, between SOCAR, Karasu Development Company and SOCAR Oil Affiliate (SOA). The agreement entered into force on September 12, 2000.
