Kursangi

The Kursangi field is located 100 km of Baku, 30-32 km south-west of Alat railway station in the Kura basin between Kurovdagh, Mishovdagh and Galmaz onshore fields.

The structural projecting in the field began in 1937. The anticlinic folds were identified due to the seismic surveys carried out in 1947-1948. Although three exploration wells were drilled in the field in 1959, they did not reach the project depth. Well No. 5, drilled in 1960, was involved in the development with a daily output of 20-25 tons of oil from a depth of 2,896 m. Afterwards, exploration wells No. 8 (55-60 tons/day) and No. 6 (150 tons/day) also produced commercial oil. The Kursangi field has a tectonically bent brachianticlinal structure extending to the north-west. During structural and exploratory drilling in 1961, commercial oil and gas were extracted from the wells. In 1977, it was found out that the Kursangi field consisted of the Kursangi North and Kursangi South folds and several oil and gas horizons. A total of 495 wells have been drilled in the field. As of January 1, 2024, there are 218 wells in the Kursangi oil field, of which 142 are operational. From the beginning of development - from 1962 to January 1, 2024, approximately 13,053 million tons of oil and condensate, more than 9.8 billion m³ of gas were extracted from the field. The maximum oil production of the field was recorded in 1970 with 485,000 tons.

The field is operated by Salyan Oil Ltd. The Agreement on Rehabilitation, Exploration, Development and Production Sharing for the Block including Kursangi and Karabakhly oil fields in Azerbaijan was signed on the 15th of December 1998 between SOCAR, Frontera Resources and Delta/Hess Ltd and entered into force on the 22nd of April 1999. In November 2021, CNPC International (Kura) and FAL sold their shares to GL International. Currently, SOCAR and GL International are shareholders in the field. The agreement covers a total area of 450-km².
