The Kurovdagh field is located near the city of Shirvan, 120 km south-west of Baku, in the Lower Kura basin, along the left bank of the Kura River in a north-western, south-western direction. The field, which is included in the Padar-Kurovdagh-Karabakhly-Babazanan-Duzdagh-Neftchala anticline, is surrounded by the Kichik Harami plateau in the north, the Mishovdagh fold in the north-east, the Kursangi anticline in the south-east, and the Salyan basin in the south-west. The field is 22 km long and 5 km wide. The structure of the field is compounded by the presence of mud volcanoes - Pirgarin (152 m high) in the north and Goytapa (127 m high) in the central part.
The oil and gas content of the Kurovdagh field was manifested through mud volcanoes before the exploration wells were drilled. Geological research of the area began in the early twentieth century, exploration work was carried out at different times (1913, 1938, 1941, 1954-1955). For the first time, the industrial productivity of the field was determined in 1955 by extracting 31 tons of oil per day from exploration well No. 2. The most productive well in the field produced 370,000 tons of oil. In 2003-2005, it was decided to explore the resources of the Kurovdagh field in new ways, and Russia’s PetroAlliance Services Company Limited conducted 3D seismic surveys in the area. Starting from 2010, new wells were drilled in the south of the field. From the beginning of development to the 1st of January 2024, 1,247 wells were drilled in the Kurovdagh field. 562 wells have been liquidated, 248 oil wells are in operation. The maximum oil production on the field was recorded in 1966 with 2.254 million tons. From the beginning of development until the 1st of January 2024, the field has produced 41.004 million tons of oil and 5 billion 740 million m3 of gas. 390 tons of oil and 138.5 thousand m3 of gas are produced daily from operational wells.
The field is operated by Shirvan Operating Company, which is acting under the Agreement on Rehabilitation, Exploration, Development and Production Sharing of the Block including the Kurovdagh field signed on the 3rd of February 2009 with SOCAR, Global Energy Azerbaijan Limited and SOCAR Oil. The agreement entered into force on the 5th of October 2009 and covers 115 km² area.
