Korgoz-Gyzyltepe-Shongar

The Korgoz-Gyzyltepe oil and gas field is located in the west of Absheron Peninsula, 20 km from Baku City, in the Puta valley between the Guzdek plain and Korgoz (Baku Ears) highland, but Shongar is located in the central part of the Western Absheron, in the east end of the Shorbulag-Shongar valley.

Here, the cones of Shongar, Sarinca and Gulbakht mud volcanoes rise above the earth’s surface. At the end of the 19th century, G. V. Abikh, D. V. Golubyatnikov in 1903, N. I. Usheykin in 1913, and V. A. Sulin in 1926 carried out geological research in the area. In 1931, the exploratory well drilled in the Korgoz field produced 150 tons per day, in 1936, the well drilled in the Gyzyltepe field produced 450 tons per day, and the well drilled in the Shongar field produced 358 tons per day, thus the exploitation of the field began.

The field consists of alternating layers of clays, sands, and limestone of different lithological thicknesses. The presence of a gas cap in the south wing was also determined. Tectonically, the deposit has a complex asymmetric anticlinal structure, extending in the transverse direction to the east and south-west (Gyzyltepe area). A tectonic fault passing through the axis of the fold divides the deposit into two blocks. The tectonic structure of the Shongar area is characterised by the presence of steeply lying layers and Shongar mud volcanoes extending to the north-west. Although microbiological methods were used to increase the oil recovery factor in the Korgoz field, the process was later stopped due to technical reasons.

The Korgoz-Gyzyltepe-Shongar field has been in industrial development since 1931. 251 wells have been drilled there. Since the beginning of the development until the 1st of January 2024, about 1.869 million tons of oil and 511 million m3 of gas were extracted from the field. The field is in the final stage of its development, but it can be considered as a prospective one due to the restoration of out-of-working wells and putting them into operation, as well as conducting exploration work. The field is in the final stages of development.

The Korgoz-Gyzyltepe-Shongar filed is operated by the Amirov OGPD of SOCAR’s Azneft PU.
