The Kalamaddin field is located at the south-western foot of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, 142 km from Baku, north-west of the Hajigabul railway station. Administratively, the field is included in the Shamakhy region. The field, which is part of the Kalamaddin-Mishovdagh-Bandovan anticline, is tectonically in the form of a brachianticlinal fold, compounded by numerous transverse and longitudinal fractures. The Injabel and Pashali-Akhtarma mud volcanoes in the area testifies to the presence of oil and gas reserves.
After proving discovery of oil and gas reserves in the Lower Kura trench, Kurovdagh, Mishovdagh and Karabakhli fields, starting from 1956, it was decided to carry out prospecting and exploration work in the neighbouring structures as well. In 1964, exploration wells were drilled in the Kalamaddin and Great Harami fields. The well drilled in 1967 at Kalameddin field with daily production of 4 tons of oil and 1000 m³ of gas was brought into development. The field has a very compound tectonic-structural formation. Through a large number of wells drilled in 1986-1987, field data were re-processed, and it was determined that the Kalamaddin fold consisted of two domes (north and south) separated by a small saddle, and oil and gas reserves were formed mainly in the northern dome. The industrial development of the field began in 1980. As of the 1st of January 2024, 151 wells have been drilled in the field since the beginning of development, 30 of which were exploration wells. Up to 101.5 million m3 of gas and 1.579 million tons of oil have been extracted from these wells so far. As of the 1st of January 2024, 46 wells on the field are in operation, and 17 wells are inactive. These wells produce 29 tons of oil and 1,000 m3 of gas per day.
The development of the Kalamaddin field is carried out by the Karasu Operating Company under the Agreement signed between SOCAR, Karasu Development Company and SOCAR Oil Affiliate on the 30th of August 2000, for the Rehabilitation, Exploration and Production Sharing on the fields of Mishovdagh and Kalamaddin in the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Agreement entered into force on the 12th of September 2000.
