The Southern field is located 4-8 km southwest of Chilov Island and 15-16 km east of the Absheron peninsula. The sea depth in this area varies between 10 and 16 m.
The Reflection Seismology Method discovered the Southern structure during surveys in 1947-1950. It was divided into the South-1 and South-2 areas. Deep exploration drilling in the structure started with the drilling of a well that was planned to be 3,800 m in depth (well No. 1). Despite that it opened the Girmaki (Kirmaki) productive layer, the well was abandoned at 3,661 m due to technical reasons.
Seismic surveys carried out in 1959 once more proved the oil and gas bearing capacity of the Southern rise. Although drilling in the field was suspended after the drilling of well No. 1, it was resumed in 1962. Recently drilled well No. 2 was designed 700 m northwest of well No. 1, in the structure's arch. The 4,400 m deep well was drilled in May 1962. In the second half of that year, 5 more wells were drilled in accordance with the project. Deep exploration well No. 7 has pumped 500,000 m3 of gas per day.
In total, 39 wells (34 explorations, 1 prospecting and 4 exploitation wells) had been drilled in the South-1 area by 1 January 2021 (25 of these wells have already been abandoned and 14 are on standby). The exploitation of South-1 has now been suspended due to the repair of hydro-technical constructions.
Exploration drilling in the South-2 area began in 1976 and 100 tons of condensate and 500,000 m3 of natural gas were produced during the test of exploration well No. 2. This field is currently not under development.
The total production of the Janub field is 0.953 MM tons of oil and 11.9 bln m3 of gas, up to 1 January 2022. Residual recoverable resources are 0,03MM tons of oil and 1.69 bln m3 of gas.
In general, the Janub field is among the fields under exploration and on the balance sheet of 28 May OGDP of SOCAR's Azneft PU.
