The Girmaki field, surrounded by the Binagadi and Fatmayi fields, is located 9 km north of Baku, in the Binagadi oil and gas region on the Girmaki hills. Like a natural museum, periodically active mud volcanoes, (Kechaldagh (Stone Mountain), Zigilpiri, Keyraki, Boyukdagh (Big Mountain), Kichikdagh (Small Mountain), etc.), various stratigraphic strata that appear on the surface, mud ponds, remains of flora and fauna are widely spread in the Binagadi oil and gas region, in the north-west of the Absheron Peninsula. The 100-year old Binagadi field, and the Girmaki, Chakhnaglar, Sulutepe, Masazir, Shabandag, Fatmayi (Sianshor and Mahammadli) fields, which have been in operation for 40-90 years, are located there. At present, these fields are in the final stages of development, and a large part of the remaining recoverable oil reserves (84.2%) have been extracted. Depths of productive layer in the area range from a few meters to 2,000 meters subsurface.
The Girmaki structure on the Jorat-Fatmayi-Balakhani-Zykh tectonic line consists of an asymmetric brachianticlinal fold extending from the tectonic to the submeridional direction. Numerous oil spills are observed on the ground, which also caused the formation of ridges in the area. The field has been in operation since 1944. For many years, oil was extracted by hand from shallow wells drilled by hand from oil fields close to the surface. It is estimated that there are about 1,500 hand-drilled wells in the area. However, there is no information on the distribution of these wells on the horizon and the volume of oil production. In general, 102 wells of various purposes were drilled in the Girmaki field from the beginning of development to January 1,2024, from which 1,215,000 tons of oil and 77.6 million m3 of gas were extracted. The maximum oil production in the field was 49,000 tons in 1964. At present, there are 53 production wells in the field, 41 of which are operational.
The field Is operated by Binagadi Oil Operating Company in accordance with the Agreement on the Rehabilitation, Development and Production Sharing for the Block, including Binagadi, Girmaki, Sulutepe, Chakhnaglar, Masazir, Fatmayi, Shabandagh and Sianshor Oil Fields, signed on September 29, 2004, between SOCAR, Azen Oil Company B.V. and SOCAR’s Oil Affiliate which entered into force on September 1, 2005.
