The Garachukhur field is located in the central part of the Absheron Peninsula, 12 km east of Baku, at a height of 71-165 m above the Caspian Sea. The Garachukhur field, a continuation of the south-eastern direction of the Surakhany field, is bordered on the south by the Zykh field. The field is 5 km long and 2.9 km wide. The field with brachioanticline structure is administratively included in Surakhany district.
The intersection of the field is exactly the same as the Surakhany field, both lithologically and stratigraphically. The presence of an ancient, buried mud volcano in the southern part of the fold, in the area of Zykh Lake, has complicated the area. The first planned exploration of the field began in 1927. A year later, on April 10, 1928, well No. 2 gushed 489 tons of oil per day and the field has been involved in industrial development.
The oil from the Garachukhur field is lighter than the oil from the Surakhany field. The field is multi-layered and currently 22 facilities of the productive layer are in operation. The maximum oil production in the field – 2.355 million tons – was in 1939. As of January 1, 2024, 36.495 million tons of oil and 7.534 million m3 of gas were extracted from the Garachukhur field. Since the beginning of development, 936 wells have been drilled there. At present, 37 wells are operating in the field. The oil and gas production is 40-42 tons and 1,400-1,500 m³ per day respectively. To reduce the rate of natural decline of the field, on average, more than 40 geological and technical measures are carried out every year.
The field is being developed by Surakhany Oil Operating Company. On August 16, 2005, State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), SOCAR Oil Affiliate (SOA) and Rafi Oil FZE (UAE) signed an Agreement on the Rehabilitation, Development and Production Sharing for the Block, including Surakhany and Garachukhur Oil Fields in the Azerbaijan Republic. In accordance with the agreement, these fields have been exploited by the branch of the Surakhany Oil Operating Company in Azerbaijan Republic (Rafi Oil FZE (UAE) (Novatis Oil FZE) 75%, SOCAR Oil Affiliate 25%) since June 2, 2006.
