The Garabaghly field, which is part of the Lower Kura oil and gas region, is located on the left bank of the Kura River, 16 km south of Shirvan, between the Kurovdagh and Babazanan fields. The field extends tectonically in the north-west and south-east direction, has a brachianticlinal structure 12.5 km long and 4.5 km wide.
Exploration work in the area began in 1933-1937. Seismic surveys were conducted in 1957-1958. In 1959, structural search well No. 9 with a depth of 1,200 m was drilled in the area and the existence of a brachioanticline structure was confirmed. This structure is located south-west of the Kurovdagh fold and is separated from the Babazanan uplift by a saddle structure. Since 1959, deep drilling in the Garabaghly area has been expanded and the structure has been found to be an oil and gas area. In 1960, well No. 6, drilled in the south-western wing of the fold, at a depth of 2,776-2,815 m was put into operation gushing 34 tons of oil per day. The Garabaghly field has been involved in industrial development since 1960. From the beginning of development to January 1, 2024, 312 wells have been drilled in the field. At present, 108 wells are in exploitation (72 – operating and 36 – non-operating). As of January 1, 2024, about 7.509 million tons of oil and condensate and about 2.1 billion m3 of gas (including associated gas) were extracted from the Garabaghly field.
The development of the field is carried out by Salyan Oil Ltd Operating Company. On December 15, 1998, State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic of (SOCAR), Frontera Resources and Delta/Hess Ltd. signed an Agreement on the Rehabilitation, Exploration, Development and Production Sharing for the block including Kursangi and Garabagly Oil Fields in the Azerbaijan Republic. The agreement entered into force on April 22, 1999. In November 2021, CNPC International (Kura) and FAL sold their shares to GL Investment. Now SOCAR and GL Investment are shareholders in the field. The agreement covers a total area of 450 km².
In accordance with Third Addendum signed between SOCAR, GL Investment LLC and Salyan Oil LLC on December 27, 2023, the Agreement was extended until November 04, 2049.
