Baku Energy Week ended with a special session in Shusha, the cultural capital of Azerbaijan

A special session with the participation of more than 100 local and foreign delegates was held in Shusha on June 4 as part of the Baku Energy Forum.

At the special session on ''Path to Net Zero: Development of Green Energy Potential in Karabakh and East Zangazur Economic Regions'', Cahit Bagci, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Azerbaijan, read a letter addressed by President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyib Erdogan to the participants of the Baku Energy Week.

In his letter, Turkish President emphasized that the excellent cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkey in the field of energy, as in all areas, is of strategic importance for our countries and the region.

The letter stressed that Azerbaijan's vision in the field of renewable energy under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev is important for the stability and prosperity of the region.

Azerbaijan`s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov spoke about the policy pursued by President Ilham Aliyev on the transformation of Karabakh and East Zangazur into a ''green energy'' zone toward the path to net zero. The Minister mentioned about the renewable energy potential and cooperation opportunities of the liberated territories. He also stressed that the documents to be signed in Shusha will contribute to the ''energy transition'' process.

Rovshan Najaf, First Vice President and Acting President of SOCAR, spoke about the strategic initiatives on new horizons, including energy transition, digitalization and innovation, within the framework of SOCAR's Corporate Strategy until 2035. He underlined that the Memorandum of Understanding between SOCAR and Masdar and the Cooperation Agreement between SOCAR and bp on joint development of renewable energy sources, to be signed within the framework of special session, are key components of this strategy.

Rovshan Najaf stressed that these territories, declared a “green energy zone” by President Ilham Aliyev, will make a valuable contribution to the sustainable development of Azerbaijan, as well as to peace, security, and cooperation in the region, with their vast economic, transport, tourism, and renewable energy potential.

Gary Jones, bp`s regional president for Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, stressed that bp has been successfully operating in the oil and gas sector of Azerbaijan for about 30 years. He noted that reliable cooperation has been established with SOCAR over these years.

bp`s regional president underlined that the documents to be signed in Shusha will contribute to the development of Azerbaijan's renewable energy potential during the ''energy transition'' period.

Afterwards, Regis Agut, Managing Director and Country Chair of TotalEnergies Azerbaijan, Fawaz Al Muharrami, Acting Executive Director of Masdar Clean Energy, and Clive Turton, Chief Investment Officer of ACWA Power, addressed the session.

In addition, the session participants watched a video about Baku Energy Week and a number of documents on cooperation were signed during the Shusha special session.

It should be noted that the Cooperation Agreement between SOCAR and bp and the Memorandum of Understanding between SOCAR and Masdar envisage to decarbonize SOCAR's oil and gas operations, apply advanced technologies in the field of energy efficiency, including the joint development of renewable energy sources.

During the Shusha tour organized by the Shusha City State Reserve, the participants of the session visited the historical and cultural monuments of the cultural capital of Azerbaijan and experienced the restoration and reconstruction works conducted in the city.
