On the basis of a Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan of April 2, 2010 "Concerning Improvements in the Petrochemical Industry's Management System", the "Azerikimya" State-Owned Company was transferred to SOCAR. According to the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan of April 22, 2010 "Amending Decree No. 844 "Concerning Improvements in the Structure of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic" of 24 January 2003", the "Azerikimya" Production Union has been established within SOCAR. The Syndicate has an ethylene-polyethylene plant (EP-300, Polymer-120, isopropyl alcohol production unit, production of steam and electric energy) and a repair and construction division. The Syndicate's plants have the following capacities: ethylene-polyethylene plant - 260,000 tons of ethylene per year, 136,000 tons of propylene per year, 120,000 tons of polypropylene per year, 25,000 tons of industrial isopropyl alcohol per year, and 24400 tonnes of absolute isopropyl alcohol per year, 1,750 tonnes of absolute di-isopropyl alcohol per year, and 480 tons of steam per hour and 32 MW of electric power per hour. After the transference of Azerikimya to SOCAR, a number of measures have been taken towards supplying PU’s facilities with stable raw materials, improving the quality of products and boosting production, as well as modern nitrogen-oxygen complex, water-cooling device, absolute isopropyl alcohol section, facilities for removal of propane-propylene fraction from the sulphur compounds and butane-butylene fraction hydrogenation have been constructed and put into operation. Following the reconstruction, the central laboratory has been provided with modern equipment. Consequently, the unit has produced 103 thousand tons of polyethylene for the first time. Reconstruction and modernisation of existing industries, including construction works on new production facilities and auxiliary production have been launched at Azerikimya PU’s Ethylene-Polyethylene Plant to ensure the Polypropylene (PP) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) plants, being under construction within SOCAR Polymer project, with required quantity and quality of ethylene, propylene and hydrogen. Italian TECHNIP has already started the large-scale reconstruction work. Modernisation works envisage construction of high concentration of hydrogen facility, propane-propylene fraction treatment facility and EP-300 production management centre to boost the propylene productivity, as well as replacement of out-dated equipment with more modern ones, modernisation of control and measurement system of technological process, increasing the project capacity, and expansion of the use of new raw materials – gas fractions. One of the projects implemented includes the construction of a new waste water treatment facility with a daily capacity of 2600 m3. The main purpose of constructing this facility is to ensure the maximum level of cleanliness of water discharged into the Caspian Sea and use of treated water for irrigation. As a result of the reconstruction work, production capacity of propylene and ethylene will be increased.
